My Reply to a Comment on FitGirl’s Call For Donations Page

It’s understandable why you would rather have cryptocurrency, but I was wondering if a loophole is possible for those that wouldn’t want to buy crypto to donate. For example, donations sent to trusted person(s) in your circle that reroute the donations through crypto to your pockets. Seems like a bit extra work for you guys, but perhaps it might increase the monthly sum enough to compensate the effort.

Ignore this if it already crossed your minds before.

FitGirl replied:

That would put that extra person to a risk of banning his fiat accounts and prosecution from law enforcement agencies.

My reply:
Imagine getting someone you care about in trouble just for the sake of getting fee-ridden donations for pirating/repacking games. If anything, PayPal shouldn’t even be used even if you provide a perfectly legal service; Most people that use this site probably don’t even have the option to use the “Friends and Family” feature anyway, so it makes this a horrible idea, not to mention the ultra obvious privacy issue. I have 3 PayPal monthly subscribers for IT work, and every time I get a payment, PayPal takes 4.4% + $0.30 fee, but since I get paid in €, I’m sure they take more, and if I want to withdraw that money, I lose 5% more in currency conversion to my local currency, and a $5 withdrawal fee. PayPal is the epitome of enshittification, especially when you know how the company started and how it is now, and anyone who suggests the use of PayPal needs a critical update to their glitchy common sense.

Oh, and if I wanted to buy crypto using PayPal, then the rate is draconian as hell, not the mention that since the account is not even in my name, 99.99% of traders wouldn’t sell crypto to someone like me**. It’s like PayPal is designed to make most of its users spend money instead saving or withdrawing it, but then again, that’s the goal of every company in existence.

**The only person who sold me crypto via PayPal years ago even when my name did not match the one on the account was a nice Indian lady, but the rate was still through the roof. I was still super happy that I sent her a tip before I even knew she was a girl — she was more surprised than I was. It’s a personality trait of mine; when someone helps me out of a desperate situation, I can’t help but show appreciation instantly, like a buddy of mine who introduced me to CloudFlare WARP while I had Internet issues preventing me from going Mr. Clean on a French client’s server that was crawling with malware (over 50 WordPress sites). After I sent him 20 bucks for that awesome suggestion, he was like, “WTF?! WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU, MAN? WHY?! I DIDN’T DO ANYTHING!” Funny how I react the same when people try to reward me for something I can do in my sleep.
