My Comment on Innocence’s “Why We Play Video Games Less As We Get Older” Video

As a kid, I used to play video games more because I was trying to escape reality (I was kind of poor, so I couldn’t afford pretty much anything, and school sucked even though I was effortlessly a great (rebellious) student, mostly), and now that I’m free from school completely, my reality is just great, so I don’t feel the need to play video games all day, because now I can spend time reverse-engineering an app or remove malware from somebody’s server or softmod somebody’s console, and the list goes on… oh, or i can simply choose to do nothing at all, and still be content. In other words, any challenge or problem that I get to solve is, in and of itself, a mini game. Besides, doing nothing can also be fun or it can even be considered a luxury, and for those who feel guilty about doing nothing, remember: “The time you enjoy wasting is not wasted time.”

And kind of like you said at around 5:30, we tend to become more selective the older we get whether it’s playing video games or reconsidering our friendships, romantic or business relationships, etc.

Nowadays, I only play PES 2019 in legend mode or Tekken 8 against CPUs to pass the time, kind of trying to stay sharp the way senior citizens play bingo, and speaking of bingo, the last game I finished was actually Resident Evil 4 Remake in Hardcore mode. After the first playthrough took me 28 hours, I felt too lazy for a New Game+.

So it’s not always about responsibilities or mental health or lack of energy. I think the tendency to be selective comes from the fact that a lot of stuff gets recycled in a different package anyway, and since companies prioritize quantity over quality most of the time for the sake maximizing their profits, it’s only common sense for some of us to choose not to be consumed by consumerism, if you will.
